Celle, Lüneburger Heide, Germany![]() Herman Hüsselmann came from Germany to South Africa in 1824. He was born in the town of Celle (GPS coordinates 52.37N, 10.05E), near the Aller River, at the edge of Lüneburg heath. (Click here for a Google Earth placemark for Celle) Celle was a thriving medieval centre, noted for historic wax-processing industry (since 1603) and has one of the oldes dye works in Europe. It is also famed for horse breeding and tree nurseries. The city was damaged in World War II. Hierarchical position - Continent of Europe, Nation Deutschland, state of Niedersachsen, district (national) of Lüneburg. The area around the cities and towns of Hanover, Brunswick, Lüneburg and Celle passed to the House of Welf (originally from Bavaria) in the 13th Century and was known as Brunswick-Lüneburg. It was split into a number of smaller principalities by the 18th Century. The Lüneburg lands (with the Capital at Celle) passed to the principality of Brunswick-Calenburg-Göttingen (known as Hanover) in 1705 and has since remained part of the principality, then kingdom of Hanover and later of the Prussian province of Hanover. The Lüneburger Heide was the site of the German surrender to the British-Canadian forces under Montgomery on 4 May 1945. Today, the Lüneburger Heide lies in the state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), in the southern section, forming the Celler Land. |
